Bamboo & Sustainability

Why are MISH products sustainable?

MISH achieves its sustainability goals by using eco-friendly materials and waste-reducing production methods. Visit MISH & Sustainability to learn more.

What is “fast furniture,” and how is it harming our environment?

“Fast furniture” is commoditized furniture that is mass produced quickly and cheaply. It has quickly been replacing quality craftsmanship, and in many homes it has completely taken over. It is estimated that in 2018 Americans threw out more than 12 million tons of furniture and furnishings. In 1960, Americans threw away only about 2 million tons; the growth in furniture waste has far exceeded the country’s population growth. Most of the furniture currently in our landfills was made in the last 10 to 15 years.

Fast furniture is also leading to deforestation, increased carbon emissions, and the depletion of our natural resources. Deforestation is estimated at 10 million hectares a year( our planet has already lost around a third of its total forest cover), and is responsible for at least 10% of the world’s greenhouse emissions. IKEA consumes approximately 1% of the world’s total lumber supply every year. These types of companies have been found to illegally log old-growth trees (200-600 years old) from virgin forests to keep up with the demand for their products. Still, mass produced furniture is often made of low-quality, non-recyclable materials, such as veneer-covered particle board and plastics, meaning they will not stand the test of time. Many of these items are specifically designed to have a lifespan of only 5 years, ensuring customers come back for more.

MISH’s goal is to combat furniture waste, deforestation, and harmful emissions by creating long-lasting, beautiful furniture with sustainable materials, while consciously reducing our waste and environmental impact.

Is bamboo even considered wood?

No, technically it is a grass. However, in many applications, it can be worked with as if it were a hardwood. Also, MISH bamboo products can be repaired and recycled just as if it were wood. So we usually just refer to it as “wood.”

How should I clean and care for bamboo products?

Ordering

What are "made-to-order" items?

Many MISH products are “made-to-order,” meaning we do not keep an inventory in stock and they are personalised per order. Once your order is placed we will begin crafting the item specifically for you. Expected lead times are listed on product pages. However, after ordering we will email you with more details and an accurate estimate (see below “What are lead times and how long will it take to receive my order?”).

Where can I view MISH products in person?

At this time we do not have a physical showroom, and our workshop is not open to the public. However, we have partnered with The Collector in Kinsale, where their cocktail & coffee bar utilises much of our furniture, and their design shop sells our homewares.

Maybe you should be asking, "why don't more sites have lego?"

What is considered damage or faults?

It is MISH’s goal to deliver high quality craftsmanship, while not overworking the natural characteristics of our materials. It is not our goal to force nature to look “perfect.” Instead, at MISH, we embrace these idiosyncrasies.

Acceptable attributes may include:

  • Fibres and texture - Bamboo is made of long fibres that create beautiful patterns and textures, we will not attempt to alter this.
  • Inclusions - Often there are small cavities within bamboo. When necessary, we may fill these in.
  • Colour variations - Bamboo occurs in a variety of shades and colours, especially in the endgrain (this is what makes it beautiful). For items that have multiple parts, we do our best to ensure no part looks mismatched from the others.
  • Burns - When cutting and milling bamboo, friction can char the bamboo. If this is noticeable as “made by machine” then we will fix it, however, if it is small and irregular, we may not.
  • Rough surfacing - Generally all furniture is polished to a very pleasant and smooth finish. However, this does require a significant amount of energy, and since it is not in our ethos to overwork natural material, we intentionally under-process some hidden areas. This is especially true on the underside of some furniture where many pieces of bamboo come together.
  • Hairline separations - Bamboo is a very flexible material, and susceptible to changes in climate. This may cause parts to have a visible hairline separation where they come together. This is fine and poses no structural compromise.

Unacceptable “damage” and “faults” include:

  • Cracks
  • Burns noticeably made by machine
  • Human/machine made stains
  • Human/machine made dents or chips - Not to be confused with “inclusions”, see above.
  • Scratches on easily visible areas - Visible areas should be free of noticeable scratches, however, we may intentionally under-process some hidden areas, not removing some imperfections. This is especially true on the underside of furniture.
  • Significant separation between parts
  • Anything MISH deems to weaken the structural integrity of an item
  • Missing pieces
